(M)essage loud & clear, Don’t You Waste Food

Amongst all the development concerns, the issues related to equal access to food, food conservation remains most undervalued. We often overlook that food is a right of every individual and not a privilege. Somebody’s “joys of the world” could be another’s lifelong struggle. Every single day someone is dying of hunger because of the food we throw away.

This thought brought me to The Khidmat Foundation’s GiveFood Initiative where I started participating in the meal distribution programmes and eventually decided to work with the organisation full time. Since past twelve years, the organisation has been relentlessly supporting individuals with innovative resources and providing them with supportive programs for a sustainable change across the country. Around 3500 people are fed; nutritious, wholesome, freshly prepared meals prepared in the community kitchens.

As a data-driven organisation, our team rigorously monitors the effectiveness of every program, project and pilot that we implement. We as a community believe that everyone deserves quality life. The mission of the foundation is to promote Sri Sri Babaji’s dream and responsibility through developing individual lives for self-sufficiency, promoting economic opportunity for the marginalized and engaging individuals through scholarships and sponsorships for current community role models, mentoring and empowering ordinary people.

We are also responsible for reducing food wastage at the individual, household and institutional level, creating an impact at the local, national and global level. #DYWF is a call-to-action plan of UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to improve the social and economic conditions of people across the globe. The 12th goal of SDG aims at responsible production and consumption, the thrust of which is to “reduce food wastage by 50% at production and consumption level”; by 2030.The campaign enables by providing a platform for centralizing and sharing information, developing analyses, creating necessary coordination mechanisms and supporting capacity building on food waste reduction.

The ripple effect has already begun. We are very sure that it will touch million lives from here on, because as we speak there are millions who are waiting for us. It is a movement, which started very simply. No complicated jargons, no complicated terminologies. It is a habit to be inculcated in each one of us.

This is just a beginning. There is lot of work waiting for us in the future.
